There is one textarea and four live totals. No submit button. Counts update on every keystroke and paste using simple JavaScript splits—not a linguistic parser.

Exactly how the four numbers are derived

  • Words — trim the string, then split(/\s+/). Empty input is 0. Hyphenated well-known is one word. Consecutive spaces collapse.
  • Characters — string.length, so spaces, punctuation, and newline characters all count. This is not a “without spaces” mode; the UI has no such toggle.
  • Sentences — number of matches of /[.!?]+/g. An ellipsis ... is one match. Dr. and 3.14 inflate the number.
  • Paragraphs — split on /\n\s*\n/. Single line breaks do not start a new paragraph.

What it is not counting

There is no reading-time, keyword density, or “characters without spaces” tile. Unicode grapheme clusters (emoji with modifiers) follow JavaScript UTF-16 length, so one visible emoji can be more than one character.

Processing

The textarea never leaves the browser. Counting is not logged. If you need a similarity check against a second draft, that is a different page.

Counting questions

How is a word counted?

The text is split on runs of whitespace, so anything separated by a space or line break counts as one word. A hyphenated term such as well-known counts as one word, and attached punctuation is not counted separately.

Does the character count include spaces?

Yes. Every character is counted, including spaces, punctuation and line breaks. This is the figure most platforms mean when they state a character limit.

Why is the sentence count sometimes wrong?

Sentences are detected from punctuation rather than grammar, so abbreviations such as Dr. or e.g. and decimal numbers are treated as sentence endings. The word and character counts are exact; treat sentences and paragraphs as close estimates.

How are paragraphs counted?

By blank lines. If your text separates paragraphs with a single line break rather than an empty line, the whole block may be counted as one paragraph.

Is there a maximum length?

No. There is no imposed limit, though extremely long text depends on your browser and device.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Counting is local. Treat it as a convenience, not a classified-document workflow — browser extensions can still see the page.
